É também a história de um mal, no sentido de patologia: o narrador vai-nos fazendo a história clínica dos dois personagens principais. Ambos marcados pela crueldade de um meio rural violento, têm em comum uma história de amor e um crime (original) punitivo e instaurador de uma ordem moral. E Madalena, principal móbil da pulsão sanguinária de ambos. Seguem caminhos distintos, multiplicando os seus gestos assassinos. João de Deus busca a razão final de tudo e a luz através das trevas; Pedro Cruz postula a prática do mal como forma de o expurgar do mundo.

This is one story of the evil. The evil inseparable of the existence and, so, a condemnation of the human condition. A vision of the evil as «strategic act of God». It is also the story of an evil in the sense of pathology: the narrator does a clinical story of the two main characters. Both influenced by the cruelty of a violent rural environment, have in common a love story and a punitive crime (the original sin) which creates a moral order. And Madalena, major cause of the bloodthirsty pulsion. They follow different lives, multiplying their murderers gestures. João de Deus try to find the final reason of everything (the meaning of life) and the light through the darkness; Pedro Cruz postulates the practice of the evil as a way of purging it from the world.
